A-Team (OFS)

Explanation
The A-Team, also known as the 'Phakathis' was a vigilante group set up and headed by a well-known local councillor in the Thabong area of Welkom to counter the activities of the UDF primarily, and in a smaller measure, the ANC. The A-Team carried out a reign of terror in several areas of the province, particularly in Thabong and Parys, under the guise of 'maintaining order'. In at least one case, the A-Team is alleged to have been supported by police and municipal structures.

Then we will call Strydom - I'm sorry - then we will call Gen Wandrag, who was the commanding officer of the Task Force to tell you what he knows about it and the instructions he gave to the next witness, which will be Gen Strydom, who was the Commander of the Task Team and at that stage we'll go ...
MS CATHY P MAKHENE: Mr Chairman of the TRC, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the team and the house, we thank you for this opportunity granted us. We really are grateful to the Lord for having given us this chance. As women to come and present to this aghast team how we feel about the situation ...
All I want to know is that on occasions you will alternate driving, in that Mr Dube or Mr Mbane or yourself would drive a motor vehicle on a specific operation. You were not the only driver in that team, is that correct?
After four and a half months I returned to my station, Springs, where I was in control of a unit aimed at the arrest of Black people who had committed passbook contraventions. My team and I, consisting of about 14 Black police officers, regularly performed raids. (Inaudible) contraventions. ...

Mr Swanepoel, could you tell me when you joined the Special Operations team in Special Forces?
MR PHOSA: What I really wanted to find out - perhaps I should put it differently, I assume too much. You know Vlakplaas has a reputation, a public reputation - I don’t know if it’s correct, of having been a place where people were tortured or members of that team were torturing politicos and even ...
MR PRETORIUS: That is correct. That would be the exception to the rule, Chairperson, as I have already stated. If I can recall correctly Mr Coetzee made use of my members on a regular basis. The reason for that is because Mr Coetzee and I worked together for several years in Soweto and when he ...
MR BIZOS: Now, were you a member of the investigation team in relation to the murder of Mr Hani in a full-time capacity, or had you been called in merely for the purposes of obtaining a statement from Mrs Derby-Lewis?

"Deception on a spectacular scale is precisely what happened in this case. In consequence the first, and perhaps only, opportunity to hold individuals in senior positions accountable for attempts to eliminate political opponents by violent means has been lost.
