Operation Zero Zero

Explanation
Eight young activists were killed and at least seven were injured in explosions involving booby-trapped hand grenades in Duduza, KwaThema and Tsakane, Tvl, on 26 June 1985. The zero-timed grenades had been provided by a Vlakplaas operative purporting to be an MK operative. The operation, codenamed 'Zero Zero', had been authorised by the Minister of Law and Order. Fifteen Security Branch operatives, including the head of the Security Branch and other senior personnel, were granted amnesty for the operation.

After I contacted the special investigation team and told them I would give them my full co-operation, I handed three containers with weapons which I had buried. Mr de Kock also did know of all the weapons and amongst others there were 5 LMGs, 6 Makarovs and some explosives.

As a young man it is very important for me to know that there’s a future in this country and my co-operation in preparing this statement was for the purpose of to see what - to determine why and how the church in Stellenbosch could allow that so many injustices could occur.

MR KHWEZA: Did you know who had given the orders to Bobbie, Sonny and the other gentleman to carry out the operation in question?
MR STANFORD: It is, it's very difficult, and I hoped my daughter would be here with me, but she had to go under and urgent operation in Maritzburg yesterday and wasn't able to come down.
MR MAPOMA: Were you aware that it was going to be used in that operation?
MR MOTLOKWA: That was so Sir, that was the case but because of certain reasons we did not have a code of conduct the situation forced us. I've already told you that the members of the MK taught us how to handle guns. That is why most of the time the Kangaroo Court was in operation.
