CHIKANE, Frank

Age 38

Description
Chikane, head of the South African Council of Churches (SACC) and an ANC activist, was tortured and assaulted by named members of the Security Branch during his detention in 1977, and again, a year later. In May 1985, a petrol bomb was thrown at his house. In July 1989, while travelling abroad, he became seriously ill on at least four occasions. Forensic tests established that his clothing had been sprayed with toxic chemical substances. The perpetrators, including former Police Minister Adriaan Vlok and his police chief Johan van der Merwe, received suspended ten year sentences.
