MAKAULA, Sindekile 35An ANC supporter who was shot and killed in a dawn attack on the ANC stronghold of Bhambayi, near KwaMashu, Durban, on 16 February 1993, allegedly in internal conflict over access to resources and `muti`. Ten people were killed and thirty five houses were burnt down.References
MAKAWULO, Anna 65An ANC supporter who lost two houses in an arson attack at Nqutu, KwaZulu, near Vryheid, Natal, on 20 April 1994 in the conflict between ANC and the IFP supporters in the run-up to the April 1994 elections.References
MAKAYI, GideonWas hacked with pangas by hostel-dwellers in Mzimhlophe, Soweto, Johannesburg, on 24 August 1976 during conflict between residents and hostel-dwellers. Two of his brothers died with him when violence erupted after hostel-dwellers supported the state in their brutal suppression of the Soweto uprising.References
MAKAZA, Michael MthetheleliHe died four days after he was shot by members of the SAP while he was attending a night vigil in KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage, Cape, on 14 January 1985.References
MAKAZA, Samuel James 18Was severely tortured while in detention by named members of the SAP in May 1986 in Pearston, Cape. The police wanted him to admit to the killing of the mayor`s son and to submit the names of others who took part in the killing.References
MAKAZENI, ShuluthuAn ANC supporter who was killed in KwaMakhutha, Amanzimtoti, near Durban, on 5 October 1991, allegedly by members of the KwaZulu Police.References
MAKEBE, Ramakhomane Adam Dipepe 21An ANC supporter who was detained and severely beaten by members of the SAP at the Reddersburg police station, Orange Free State (OFS) in March 1988, after toyi-toying with others during a political demonstration.References
MAKEKE, Michael 23Was shot in the leg by members of the SAP during intense public unrest in Duncan Village, East London, on 16 August 1985. See Duncan Village. References
MAKENA, Mapoti StephenWas arrested by members of the SADF in Moutse, KwaNdebele, on 1 January 1986 and shot while in police custody. Many villages in the area were raided that day, allegedly to suppress resistance to incorporation into KwaNdebele.References
MAKENA, Steven RakoshoA COSAS member who was recruited for military training by a Security Branch agent purporting to be an MK operative. He was killed in the Nietverdiend ambush near the Botswana border on 26 June 1986. Eight operatives from SADF Special Forces, Northern and Western Transvaal Security Branches were granted amnesty for the operation (AC/1999/0190, AC/1999/0192,AC/1999/0194, AC/1999/0031, AC/1999/0188, AC/1999/0030 and AC/1999/0197). MAKER, EWas injured in what became known as the Magoo`s Bar bombing in Durban on 14 June 1986. The explosion killed three women and injured at least seventy four other people. Seven MK operatives were granted amnesty (AC/2001/128).References
MAKETHA, Elizabeth Mantoa 50She lost her home in KwaMashu, Durban, in an arson attack by Inkatha supporters on 17 November 1989 in intensifying political conflict.References
MAKEWU, NtlukwaneAn ANC supporter who was severely beaten while detained at Bizana prison in Emqeni, Transkei, in 1960, allegedly because of his opposition to the Trust Land Act. It is believed that he later died due to the injuries he sustained while in prison.References
MAKGAE, Moshe Moses 31Was shot dead by a named member of the Lebowa Police in the street in Mahwelereng, Lebowa, on 7 March 1986. Police claimed that youths were stoning public transport when the policeman opened fire, killing Mr Makgae and wounding another. The perpetrator was found not guilty on charges of murder because of contradictory evidence by state witnesses.References
MAKGAJANE, Maria Dimakatso 36Was forced from her home by IFP supporters in Alexandra, Johannesburg, on 16 March 1992 after conflict between IFP-aligned hostel-dwellers and ANC supporters.References
MAKGALA, Philip Willie 23A PAC member who was tortured in detention by members of the SAP in Springs, Transvaal, on 21 April 1963. He was charged under the Terrorism Act and sentenced to eighteen months` imprisonment.References
MAKGALAMELE, Potoka FranzarA taxi driver who was fatally stabbed and shot by a member of the Orde van die Dood on 29 August 1989. The Amnesty Committee heard that the perpetrator carried out the killing in order to satisfy himself that he was capable of carrying out his duties as an assassin and to fulfil the requirements for initiation into the Orde. The applicant was refused amnesty (AC/1998/0025).References
MAKGALE, Christopher Ntshimane 48An ANC supporter who was severely beaten in custody by members of the Bophuthatswana Police in GaRankuwa, Bophuthatswana, in 1991. He was accused of killing a Mangope tribal appointee.References
