Was beaten, suffocated by a plastic bag and subjected to electric shocks by members of the Bophuthatswana Police and the SAP in Zeerust, Transvaal, in August 1989. He was arrested on charges of killing a policeman during a protest by Braklaagte community against incorporation into Bophuthatswana.
