He lost his right eye and sustained serious injuries to his head and leg when he drove a tractor over a landmine on Vlakfontein farm, Breyten, Transvaal, on 21 April 1986. The ANC had launched a landmine campaign aimed at military patrols in rural areas but it was subsequently called off in the light of the high civilian casualty rate.
