Was arrested and charged with twenty five others known as the Upington 26 after the crowd killing of a Municipal Policeman in Pabalello, Upington, Cape, on 13 November 1985. Mr Yona and thirteen others received the death penalty, spending two years on death row before his sentence was commuted to a prison term on appeal in 1991. He was later released as a political prisoner.
