Operation Zero Zero

Explanation
Eight young activists were killed and at least seven were injured in explosions involving booby-trapped hand grenades in Duduza, KwaThema and Tsakane, Tvl, on 26 June 1985. The zero-timed grenades had been provided by a Vlakplaas operative purporting to be an MK operative. The operation, codenamed 'Zero Zero', had been authorised by the Minister of Law and Order. Fifteen Security Branch operatives, including the head of the Security Branch and other senior personnel, were granted amnesty for the operation.

DR ALLY: Because, Mama, you may know that in the same period, 1985, June, July, that there was actually an operation, it was called Operation Zero Zero, which the Security Police were responsible for. What it involved was giving to young Comrades, grenades that people pretended to be from the ...
During August 1988 explosives were put in the basement of Khotso House and the building was badly damaged in the ensuing explosion. A night watchman was injured but fortunately nobody was killed. All the applicants played a part, as envisaged above, in the carrying out of the operation.
MS KHAMPEPE: You will remember, Mr Lourens, that the reason advanced by Mr Maxam for participating in this operation to steal firearms was to make sure that the operation succeeded and that the other people did not bungle, because he was the leader and he had no confidence in whether they would be ...
The incidents in question occurred during the period 1984 - 1986 at Johannesburg.  The target of the operation was a former journalist who subsequently held a senior position within the South African Council of Churches.  Applicant furnished the following particulars in regard to the ...
Both applicants acted during the operation under the borders of Cronje. They didn't partake in the operation except in so far as they accompanied Cronje and identified the spots where the operation would be carried out. They however associated themselves therewith.
... He and Joe Mamasela, a former member of MK who was turned an askari, worked very closely with Hechter and were involved in many illegal operations.  The three (3) of them worked together as a team.  What would  happen was, Hechter would receive an order from Cronje and he would ...
... the answer goes this way: The question is, in the most ambiguous manner possible, Mr Richardson concedes that at some or other level he had a co-operation arrangement with Mr Pretorius. He denies that it was the full extent of an informer. That leads us to ask the question, is it not ...
While clearly, the operation described is unmitigated abuse, the next question that we need to ask is whether Mr Klopper committed any act or deed himself, which constitutes an offence or delict for the purposes of the act for which he could be prosecuted or sued. It is only if one takes his ...
MR BOTHA: Here I specifically refer to operation butterfly which is the code name of an ANC operation

... the fence. The suspects were held at Piet Retief where they were detained in terms of Section 29 of the Internal Security Act. Through their co-operation large caches of arms were retrieved from Dead Letter Boxes. Acts of insurrection which had already been planned by MK were prevented. ...
I am right when I say that at the time during 1987, any particular person or association was seen to work in co-operation with the police, or giving evidence to the police or working in co-operation with the apartheid local Councillors, they were seen as "impimpis" and enemies of the liberation ...
... the shooting took place in the presence of his child and Mr Makola has alluded to the fact that it would not be in a spirit of carrying out an ANC operation to kill in front of a child. The excuse that he has tried to come up with, that he had to use that opportunity to kill, should not be ...
MR BRINK: And apart from the torture of these men you were merely a passive participant, so to speak, in the further conduct of the operation?
There is something I would like to say. The presence of the Special Branch and the co-operation of the employers with the Government was a very painful thing to us and we have evidence of this. Mr Chairperson, I haven’t heard an employer coming forward to the Commission saying that at the they ...
EXAMINATION BY MR VISSER: Mr Steenberg, you are an applicant for amnesty for an operation that was executed across the Swaziland border which we know happened on the 8th of December 1981, is that correct?
MR BLACK: Did he go out to the scene of the operation, did you as the Investigator take him out to where the shooting had taken place so that he could take photographs of that scene?

There was direct military action. We have this here as Operation Palmiet. This operation took place in 1984 during the height of the Vaal rent boycott. This phase gave way to another lasting era from the late part of 1985 until the national peace accord. This phase can be described as a phase ...
