Operation Zero Zero

Explanation
Eight young activists were killed and at least seven were injured in explosions involving booby-trapped hand grenades in Duduza, KwaThema and Tsakane, Tvl, on 26 June 1985. The zero-timed grenades had been provided by a Vlakplaas operative purporting to be an MK operative. The operation, codenamed 'Zero Zero', had been authorised by the Minister of Law and Order. Fifteen Security Branch operatives, including the head of the Security Branch and other senior personnel, were granted amnesty for the operation.

MR LAMEY: I may be wrong but my recollection of Mr Coetzee's evidence is indeed that the black members were not present during the whole, or were not aware of this turning action during this whole operation, if I understand his evidence correctly.
MR LAX: Yes, I understand that being the motive of the operation, but I want you to turn to page, do you have the documents in front of you, page 3? Page 3 forms part of your amnesty application, dated the 25th of April 1997. The date is on the previous page, the page after that.
MR BEESLAAR: I can only state that I was not inebriated because Col de Kock's instructions were that no liquor should be consumed before or during an operation. My share was remote but due to my minor share, I nonetheless respected the instructions of Mr de Kock and obeyed them as such.
