Operation Zero Zero

Explanation
Eight young activists were killed and at least seven were injured in explosions involving booby-trapped hand grenades in Duduza, KwaThema and Tsakane, Tvl, on 26 June 1985. The zero-timed grenades had been provided by a Vlakplaas operative purporting to be an MK operative. The operation, codenamed 'Zero Zero', had been authorised by the Minister of Law and Order. Fifteen Security Branch operatives, including the head of the Security Branch and other senior personnel, were granted amnesty for the operation.

The first applicant stood guard outside the bank. At first the operation worked according to how he had planned. But whilst the others were inside the police appeared and foiled the robbery.
The applicant has no knowledge of the extent of the damage caused during the operation nor whether any person was injured at Morget's house, except that the windows were broken.
MR KOOPEDI: Now let's go to the second incident, which would be in 1983. Were you still a member of Special Operation at that stage?
MR DU TOIT: Yes, he did, he told me that it was an authorised, approved operation from Head Office.
This notwithstanding, the elements of mastery, domination and compulsion remained central to its operation and the policies and legislation which gave it substance. The parliamentary opposition for much of this time, the United Party, had policies which differed in style but not in substance ...
MR COETZEE: Were you given any time framework within which you had to execute the operation?
MR LAX: Yes, I understand that being the motive of the operation, but I want you to turn to page, do you have the documents in front of you, page 3? Page 3 forms part of your amnesty application, dated the 25th of April 1997. The date is on the previous page, the page after that.
MR RAATH: As far as I was concerned from the time that I was involved in the operation he gave his cooperation and I had no problems with him.
Robert and another comrade, whose name I cannot recall, earlier left petrol on the school premises. That evening Robert, Matthew Lecordier, Naziem and Marson Sharpley and I got together and went to the school to carry out the operation.
"That's correct, but the operation started after the conversation with Col van Rensburg."
MR RAUTENBACH: Now what I would like to know from you, Mr Bosch, is that when you discussed this matter with Mr de Kock, you certainly would have discussed certain aspects such as how this operation will be executed, who will wrap the parcel, who will write the addresses on it.
CHAIRPERSON: Sorry Mr Moerane, who did you regard to be in charge of that operation?
MR BEESLAAR: I can only state that I was not inebriated because Col de Kock's instructions were that no liquor should be consumed before or during an operation. My share was remote but due to my minor share, I nonetheless respected the instructions of Mr de Kock and obeyed them as such.
... Anton Pretorius approached me on an unknown date with a request for three VZD1M detonators. He informed me that he needed these detonators for an operation which had already been approved by one of his commanders. I understood and accepted that these detonators would be used against the ...
MR BOOYENS: And further that you as the Technical Division received orders, you were never in a position to consider the merits of an operation, is that correct?
... light was switched off. I stayed for an hour after that and I was sure that even if there could be anything around, I will be able to carry out my operation quite successfully and I threw in the hand grenade and I disappeared in the dark of the ...
... of the disadvantaged community to take this initiative in order to reach out to other people and say exactly how we feel about this whole operation. ...
MR MHLABA: So is it your case, Mr Motlokoa, that in killing the deceased, Peacock Tsosane, you were furthering the interests of your political organisation and ensuring the smooth operation of the Self Defence Units?
"We had too many vehicles for the operation and we left some of the vehicles at Jaco Borden’s house."
... for collecting and keeping these firearms safely so that they are not used in other instances but they were only issued out when we went out on an ...
